SUMMARY:Inaugural Mentor Fireside Chat On Effective Relationship-Centered Practices In Fostering Workforce Development
DESCRIPTION:Media Contact:\nKelsey Nelson | Director of Communications\n(617) 798-4216 | knelson@mentoring.org \nMENTOR and Mass Mentoring Partnership to host leadership panel conversation around effective workplace practices and investment to drive positive change for young people \nFor this invitation-only event\, we will bring together diverse and proximate stakeholders to dive into the growing demand to integrate relationship-centered practices within workplaces\, as well as elevate the need for policies and public dollars that reinforce these investments. Together\, we will examine how the mentoring field bolsters systems and policy-level change through cross-sector partnerships with employers that center relationship-centered practices and coordinated advocacy efforts on the state and federal level for public investments. \nBOSTON – Organizations and companies are continuing to grapple with the question of how to intentionally create an inclusive workforce reflective of society\, while not falling prey to the current controversy around diversity\, equity\, and inclusion programs. In a search for balance\, senior leadership from Boston-based public and private entities along with a Massachusetts State representative will hold open dialogue about the shifts towards skills-based hiring for young people and look at the role mentorship plays within a robust\, inclusive hiring and staff retention strategy. \n\nWHAT: MENTOR’s INAUGURAL FIRESIDE CHAT ON WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES TO CREATE SYSTEMS & POLICY LEVEL CHANGE \nThe panel conversation is hosted by MENTOR\, the leading nonprofit increasing both the quality and quantity of mentoring relationships\, in partnership with MENTOR Affiliate\, Mass Mentoring Partnership. The fireside panel will shed light on the chronically disproportionate gaps in young peoples’ access to social capital and look at how mentoring bolsters systems and policy level change through cross-sector partnerships with employers that center relationship-centered practices and coordinated advocacy efforts on the state and federal level for public investments. \nWHEN: Thursday\, September 12 at 6:00 PM EST\nWHERE: Bain Capital (200 Clarendon St.\, Boston)\,\nWHO: Featured Speakers include: \n\nErnesto Anguilla\, Head of Communications and Public Affairs\, Bain Capital\nJulie Lammers\, SVP of Advocacy and Corporate Social Responsibility\, American Student Assistance\nNageeb Sumar\, Head of Social Impact\, Fidelity Investments\nAbigail Goward Hollingsworth\, Senior Vice President\, Workforce Development External Partner Engagement\, Bank of America\nChynah Tyler\, Massachusetts State Representative\nAbbie Evans\, Chief Policy & Advocacy Officer\, MENTOR\nJermaine Myrie\, CEO\, MENTOR\nDr. Cynthia K. Orellana\, CEO\, Mass Mentoring Partnership\n\n  \nTo Attend: \nThis invitation-only event\, brings together diverse stakeholders to dive into the growing demand of relationship-centered practices within workplaces\, which thus elevates the need for policies and public dollars to reinforce these investments. \nInterviews will be granted both immediately before the event and directly following the conclusion of the panel. Interested media should RSVP to attend to Kelsey Nelson at knelson@mentoring.org \n  \nVia MENTOR National

SUMMARY:Mentoring Black and brown Girls and Femmes Mentor Training
DESCRIPTION:MENTORING BLACK AND BROWN GIRLS & FEMMES\nMENTOR and its Affiliates are focused on addressing the persistent opportunity gaps and structural barriers faced by Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color (BIPOC). More specifically\, this work centers BIPOC girls and women and how their realities intersect with themes like wellness\, community-building and mentoring. Research has shown that BIPOC girls and women experience unique challenges from childhood through adulthood including disproportionately high rates of school suspension and discipline\, sexual trauma\, violence and abuse\, and a significant pay gap with barriers that prevent full participation in the workforce. \nThese challenges\, perpetuated by systems rooted in racism\, sexism\, and structural poverty\, have long-lasting effects on BIPOC communities. Although there is a high level of awareness around this\, there aren’t adequate solutions that address the short- and long-term impacts of these experiences at scale. \nThis two day training curriculum explores questions like:\n\nWhy focus on this population of young people?\nWhat challenges do Black and brown girls/femmes face?\nHow do we take special care in establishing mentoring relationships with Black and brown girls?\nHow do shared/disparate cultural experiences impact our mentoring relationships?\n\nThis training is for anyone who is in mentoring relationships with self-identified BIPOC girls/femmes or the staff of organizations who support these mentoring relationships (whether formal or informal). Participants also need to be in mentoring relationships for at least one year OR staff of youth serving programs in the field for one year or more. At this time\, participants can be any race/ethnicity and gender\, but must be 18 years or older. \n**By registering for this training – You agree you are in a mentoring relationship with self-identified Black &/or brown girls/femmes OR support folks who are in these relationships (staff from your organization). You agree you are a mentor/volunteer and have been in this role for a year or longer (experience required; no new mentors) OR you are staff who has been in the field for a year or longer. You agree that you are 18 years old or older. \nIf you do NOT agree with any statement listed above\, contact Gabrielle Paquin at gpaquin@massmentors.org \nThank you! \nRegistration/Check-in begins at 9:30am with training beginning promptly at 10am\, both days. \nLunch and snacks are included for both days of training. \nPlease email NSpriggs@MassMentors.org with any training specific questions. \n  \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn with MMP - SEL ≠ Behavior Management
DESCRIPTION:Mar. 19 SEL ≠ Behavior Management \nDuring our training and conversations about social and emotional learning\, we often run out of time to talk about the nuances of the benefits and potential harms that SEL can cause when implemented without an antiracist\, critical lens. For this Lunch and Learn\, we’ll have a brief but insightful discussion about how institutions can at times use SEL for compliance and over-policing the behavior of young people. Our discussion will include resources from writers and educators such as Dena Simmons\, Alex Shevrin-Venet\, James Comer\, Lorena German\, Paul Gorski\, and more. We’ll also touch on why SEL is under fire in conservative states\, and hear from a local Boston researcher and practitioner\, Matthew Attaya\, on why we must act to protect the right to teach social and emotional learning skills in and out of school time. \n  \nLunch & Learn Sessions – meet the third Tuesday of each month. The event may take the form of networking\, a time to get deeper in conversation with others who value and support mentoring relationships or they may offer short spurts of information on updated research\, happenings and/or tools. SUMMARY:Social Emotional Learning ASOST Training
DESCRIPTION:We believe that when adults have stronger SEL skills\, young people will too. Building strong\, supportive relationships with young people is key to building their essential life skills. We’ll review frameworks for understanding SEL\, and share practical suggestions for implementing SEL practices with young people in a way that affirms their strengths and identities\, and helps us avoid common “equity detours” that may cause more harm than good. By focusing on our own SEL skills\, we can model and support SEL growth in young people\, helping them become thriving and engaged adults. Join us to learn more! \n  \nREGISTER
