DESCRIPTION:Motivational Interviewing for Everyday Use  \nAudience:  All audiences\, mentors\, youth workers\, and staff responsible for training\, volunteers\, and community partners \nPresented by: Kaydance Scotto\, Jac Essing\, Ilani Ortiz\, and Matt Ashby \n            DIAL/SELF AmeriCorps \nPresenter profile: \nKaydance Scotto\, Jac Essing\, Ilani Ortiz\, and Matt Ashby run the DIAL/SELF AmeriCorps program in Western Massachusetts. DIAL/SELF AmeriCorps (DSAP) collaborates with local schools and youth-serving agencies to create developmental opportunities for connection\, contribution\, and growth. DSAP Members are trained to use the conversational skills of “motivational interviewing”\, alongside Positive Youth Development\, to support young people in setting goals and activating the resources they have for making progress on them. Kaydance\, Jac\, Ilani\, and Matt have a combined 24 years of experience as AmeriCorps members and staff. They have been training members and site partners in the use of Motivational Interviewing for the past 7 years.  \nMotivational Interviewing (MI) has been used in clinical settings for over 30 years. In recent years\, MI has been adapted to serve nonclinical settings\, as well. DIAL/SELF AmeriCorps has been training members and site partners to use MI to support young people in developing a stronger sense of self-efficacy in pursuit of learning goals. Members have successfully incorporated MI in a variety of settings\, from drop-in centers and afterschool programs to academic classrooms and creative programming. This workshop will provide practical information and hands-on skill-building activities for using MI to support young people with setting goals\, activating resources to achieve them\, and increasing their sense of autonomy\, connectedness\, and confidence in their ability to pursue their goals.   \nLearning objectives: \n\nParticipants will learn the spirit/principles of MI and concrete skills to implement.\nParticipants will have the opportunity to practice MI\, bring their experiences to the table\, and gain familiarity with the basic techniques.\nParticipants will build understanding of how MI can be adapted for meaningful use in multiple contexts.\n\n  \nREGISTER

She is currently the Distinguished Research Professor of Psychology at the University of the South and Director of the Life Paths Research Center. She is also the founder of ResilienceCon. Dr. Hamby has worked for more than 30 years to reduce the burden of trauma\, including front-line crisis intervention and treatment\, involvement in grassroots organizations\, and research leading to the publication of more than 200 articles and books. Dr. Hamby’s work has appeared in the Washington Post\, USA Today\, Huffington Post\, CBS News\, Psychology Today\, and hundreds of other media outlets. Her awards include Outstanding Contributions to the Science of Trauma Psychology from the American Psychological Association (APA). Increase your confidence\, knowledge and skills and be prepared to take the next step in your organization’s disability inclusion journey. \n  \n \nKristin Humphrey\, Partners for Youth with Disabilities’ National Disability Mentoring Coalition Director\, has been involved with mentoring for over a decade\, beginning with her role as a volunteer mentor. She has worked with youth with disabilities for the past fifteen years and founded a club at Connecticut College that facilitated group mentoring for siblings of youth with disabilities. She co-authored the manuscript\, “Expanding Horizons: A Pilot Mentoring Program Linking College/Graduate Students and Teens with ASD\,” which was published in the Journal of Clinical Pediatrics in 2015. Kristin has presented regionally\, nationally and globally on the topics of mentoring and inclusion. She co-authored the Inclusive Mentoring for Youth with Disabilities Supplement to the Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring\, which was published in January of 2023 by MENTOR National. Kristin graduated magna cum laude from Connecticut College with a BA in Psychology and was a selected scholar for the Holleran Center’s Program in Community Action and Public Policy. She holds a Master’s in Public Administration from Clark University and a graduate certificate in Human Service Management from Clark University. \n  \nREGISTER

This session focuses on the complex impact of these two processes on the behaviors\, relationships\, and values of first and second-generation Latino/x immigrants. \nBy the end of the workshop\, participants will have~ \n\nIdentified aspects of Assimilation and Acculturation from the first and second-generation U.S. Latino/x immigrant perspective\nExplored the advantages and disadvantages of Assimilation and Acculturation experiences and the mental health impact associated with them\nConsidered the stress of the immigration experience in relation to a sense of self\, safety\, and belonging\n\n  \nAbout the Presenter \nYsabel Garcia is a first-generation Dominican immigrant with a bold and ambitious mission to dive heart first into raw and honest conversations about mental health\, equity\, and suicide prevention. She is a social justice educator\, skilled dialogue facilitator\, wounded healer\, and disruptor of systems of oppression. \nShe embodies her messaging and personality through Estoy Aqui LLC\, a grassroots initiative that provides suicide prevention training and social justice education to organizations and institutions serving the Latino/x and Black community. Her main goal is to raise awareness of the underlying social\, cultural\, and racial factors that create conditions for suicide to exist in these populations. \nShe has earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Child Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Public Health from Bay Path University. \n  \n\n\n\n  \nRegister for this event
