SUMMARY:Meeting the Needs of Immigrant Youth
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is designed to improve understanding of immigrant youth and their families. At MMP\, we believe that every young person deserves access to caring relationships with adults that support their development.\n\nImmigrant youth are among today’s most vulnerable people.\nResearch indicates that immigrant youth face increased risk of PTSD\, depression and other mental health issues.\n\nMentoring programs can be challenged in meeting the needs of immigrant youth. This workshop is designed to provide information and guidance on how best to respond to the care needs of immigrant youth. Join Rosie McMahan in conversation with Simon Crawford Muscat. He works at Jewish Family Services. JFS resettles refugees fleeing their homelands in partnership with HIAS (formerly the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) and the State Department. In the past five years JFS resettled over 2\,000 refugees and humanitarian arrivals from around the world to Western Mass– their new home. \nAbout Simon Crawford Muscat \nBorn in Amherst\, Massachusetts\, Simon works at the Jewish Family Service of Western Massachusetts in their New American Program\, serving Refugees\, Asylum Seekers\, and new entrants as they navigate the complex set of cultural\, economic\, language\, etc. barriers new arrivals experience upon their entrance into the US. Starting there as an MMP AmeriCorps Ambassador in 2022\, Simon is committed to working and advocating to create a more just & kind world. \nAbout Rosie McMahan \nRosie McMahan worked within the Boston area for over 25 years. Along with developing and implementing services for youth\, she provided counseling and education to youth and you-serving adults in a variety of settings including schools\, health clinics\, and court systems. She has presented at conferences and facilitated workshops on the local\, national\, and international level and written curricula for classroom and non-classroom settings. Receiving her M.Ed. from Harvard Graduate School of Education\, she directed CASPAR Youth Services for over 10 years\, a program dedicated to the lives of young people struggling with alcohol and other drugs. Additionally\, she has run a small private practice called Optimistic Options. She also organizes and/or participates in community- based activities attempting to address inequities and effect social change. Rosie has expertise in the area of trauma and healing and is a published other on the topic. Her book\, Fortunate Daughter\, A Memoir of Reconciliation has been awarded first place in the Chanticlear International Book Awards 2023. In this book\, Rosie offers the reader a portrait of childhood abuse\, followed by the difficult and painful task of healing — a journey that\, in the end\, reveals the complicated and nuanced venture of repair\, reconciliation and the freedom that comes along with it. She brings both personal experience and a solid understanding of the current research and findings to support and promote healing in her work with MMP. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Day 2: Importance of Healing for Our Well-being: Healing Practices
DESCRIPTION:Healing Practices: \nOver the past 50 years\, the field of psychology and medicine has learned a lot about the causes and effects of trauma on the human mind\, body and spirit. Trauma Informed Care was developed as an approach\, which takes trauma into account when diagnosing and treating individuals. But what if we also respect the parts of a person that are vibrant\, strong and undamaged? What if we acknowledge the role that healing plays in our lives and the lives of young people? A Healing Centered Approach\, expands the vision of trauma informed care to include a more holistic understanding of ourselves\, especially as it relates to caring for youth. This workshop will provide knowledge and strategies to being in relationship with young people in a way that honors them as whole people and promotes well-being. \nAttend all 4 and receive a certificate of completion* \nImportance of Healing for Our Well-being: For Us & the Youth We Serve\nTrauma and healing series in Brockton.\n1. SUMMARY:Introduction to the Mentoring Mindset
DESCRIPTION:This training is intended to provide youth program staff with the capacity building needed to understand the critical components of the “Mentoring Mindset.” Each participant will leave with knowledge of the four core components and how they influence our work as mentors and mentees in our organization and communities. We will also unpack how this mentoring mindset can be shared with our volunteers and partners to provide shared understanding of our work. The goal for the “Mentoring Mindset” framework and training is to shift the way that relationships are created\, sustained\, and leveraged to deepen the shared responsibility of realizing each person’s full potential and their capacity to influence their communities. \n  \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Day 3: Mental Health & Dis-Ease
DESCRIPTION:Mental Health & Dis-Ease \nAdolescence is a crucial period for developing and maintaining the habits important for mental health\, but some adolescents are at greater risk of mental health conditions due to material disadvantages\, stigma\, discrimination or exclusion\, and/or lack of access to quality support and services. This is why mentoring is so critical. A supportive adult presence – that allows for a shared connection and vulnerability – contributes to positive growth and adaptation. Come and learn how to promote resiliency among young people in this virtual training\, targeted to both staff and mentors. \nAttend all 4 and receive a certificate of completion* \nImportance of Healing for Our Well-being: For Us & the Youth We Serve\nTrauma and healing series in Brockton.\n1. SUMMARY:Mentor Circle: Practicing Cultural Humility February 2026
DESCRIPTION:Practicing Cultural Humility: A Chapter of Becoming a Better Mentor \nJoin us for a brand new offering from Mass Mentoring Partnership: Mentor Circles will run every third Thursday evening of most months (dates will be adjusted if holidays interfere.) Mentor Circles are virtual\, off-hours opportunities to connect with other mentors\, build knowledge\, and practice skills related to being the best mentor you can be. Topics will vary. You are welcome as often as you can join us. \nCultural humility is an ongoing\, lifelong process of self-reflection and learning about how social identity and experiences are shaped by systems of oppression\, power\, and privilege. We consider this an especially important topic in all mentoring relationships\, even if mentors and mentees are similar in some important characteristics. Mentors with cultural humility continuously reflect on their own social identity and make efforts to learn about their mentee’s social identity\, experiences\, and background. Join us for guided reflection about the differences and similarities between mentors and mentees that are shaped by inequities in our society. Learn how cultivating this skill can help mentors overcome barriers in a relationship with a young person\, especially when approached with empathy and a growth mindset. \n  \nREGISTER
