SUMMARY:Introduction to the Mentoring Mindset
DESCRIPTION:This training is intended to provide youth program staff with the capacity building needed to understand the critical components of the “Mentoring Mindset.” Each participant will leave with knowledge of the four core components and how they influence our work as mentors and mentees in our organization and communities. We will also unpack how this mentoring mindset can be shared with our volunteers and partners to provide shared understanding of our work. The goal for the “Mentoring Mindset” framework and training is to shift the way that relationships are created\, sustained\, and leveraged to deepen the shared responsibility of realizing each person’s full potential and their capacity to influence their communities. \n  \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Day 2: Importance of Healing for Our Well-being: Healing Practices
DESCRIPTION:Healing Practices: \nOver the past 50 years\, the field of psychology and medicine has learned a lot about the causes and effects of trauma on the human mind\, body and spirit. Trauma Informed Care was developed as an approach\, which takes trauma into account when diagnosing and treating individuals. But what if we also respect the parts of a person that are vibrant\, strong and undamaged? What if we acknowledge the role that healing plays in our lives and the lives of young people? A Healing Centered Approach\, expands the vision of trauma informed care to include a more holistic understanding of ourselves\, especially as it relates to caring for youth. This workshop will provide knowledge and strategies to being in relationship with young people in a way that honors them as whole people and promotes well-being. \nAttend all 4 and receive a certificate of completion* \nImportance of Healing for Our Well-being: For Us & the Youth We Serve\nTrauma and healing series in Brockton.\n1. SUMMARY:Meeting the Needs of Immigrant Youth
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is designed to improve understanding of immigrant youth and their families. At MMP\, we believe that every young person deserves access to caring relationships with adults that support their development.\n\nImmigrant youth are among today’s most vulnerable people.\nResearch indicates that immigrant youth face increased risk of PTSD\, depression and other mental health issues.\n\nMentoring programs can be challenged in meeting the needs of immigrant youth. This workshop is designed to provide information and guidance on how best to respond to the care needs of immigrant youth. Join Rosie McMahan in conversation with Simon Crawford Muscat. He works at Jewish Family Services. JFS resettles refugees fleeing their homelands in partnership with HIAS (formerly the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) and the State Department. In the past five years JFS resettled over 2\,000 refugees and humanitarian arrivals from around the world to Western Mass– their new home. \nAbout Simon Crawford Muscat \nBorn in Amherst\, Massachusetts\, Simon works at the Jewish Family Service of Western Massachusetts in their New American Program\, serving Refugees\, Asylum Seekers\, and new entrants as they navigate the complex set of cultural\, economic\, language\, etc. barriers new arrivals experience upon their entrance into the US. Starting there as an MMP AmeriCorps Ambassador in 2022\, Simon is committed to working and advocating to create a more just & kind world. \nAbout Rosie McMahan \nRosie McMahan worked within the Boston area for over 25 years. Along with developing and implementing services for youth\, she provided counseling and education to youth and you-serving adults in a variety of settings including schools\, health clinics\, and court systems. She has presented at conferences and facilitated workshops on the local\, national\, and international level and written curricula for classroom and non-classroom settings. Receiving her M.Ed. from Harvard Graduate School of Education\, she directed CASPAR Youth Services for over 10 years\, a program dedicated to the lives of young people struggling with alcohol and other drugs. Additionally\, she has run a small private practice called Optimistic Options. She also organizes and/or participates in community- based activities attempting to address inequities and effect social change. Rosie has expertise in the area of trauma and healing and is a published other on the topic. Her book\, Fortunate Daughter\, A Memoir of Reconciliation has been awarded first place in the Chanticlear International Book Awards 2023. In this book\, Rosie offers the reader a portrait of childhood abuse\, followed by the difficult and painful task of healing — a journey that\, in the end\, reveals the complicated and nuanced venture of repair\, reconciliation and the freedom that comes along with it. She brings both personal experience and a solid understanding of the current research and findings to support and promote healing in her work with MMP. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:The Mentoring Institute: Navigating Relationship Closure and Transition
DESCRIPTION:Youth mentoring research suggests that failing to provide resolution or a clear closure process at the end of a mentoring relationship can be damaging for mentees who’ve been let down by other relationships with adults. An appropriately timed closure process is key for effectively closing a youth mentoring relationship. Even under non-ideal or unexpected circumstances\, healthy closure provides mentees with an opportunity to reflect on their experience and move forward in their life. Come prepared to learn the philosophy and management of good closure. \n  \nREGISTER

Participants will expand their understanding of the general & specific things one can do about it in their role as mentor. Participants will examine the role that their culture plays in understanding how best to respond to young people when they are struggling. SUMMARY:Nature Therapy as a Form of Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:Forest Bathing in the social media age virtual presentation \nBy Todd Lynch\, Association of Nature and Forest Therapy certified guide  \n  \nCome join Todd Lynch on a virtual experience of Forest Bathing. Todd will share why Forest Bathing is relevant today to help empower young people to restore resilience and connection within themselves and their communities. You will learn the background of the practice as well as some of the latest research around the benefits of greenspace on our physical and psychological well-being. Todd will also share some ways to explore the practice on your own. A Forest Bathing walk grants us the opportunity to slow down and allow our bodies to engage all of our senses. Forest Bathing re-aligns our rhythms with the landscape\, allowing our senses a respite from everyday demands and uncertainties. It’s a chance to remember ourselves and the joyful relationships that await us outside.  \n\nMay I walk everyday on the banks of the water\, may my soul rest on the branches of trees which I planted\, may I refresh myself under the shadow of my sycamore. \n – Egyptian tomb inscription from 1400 BCE  \n\nProgram Outline: \nWelcome  \nA slideshow review of the practice\,  \nShort\, guided experience  \nTea together.  \n\nParticipants would need  to bring/have:  \nAn object they’ve found outdoors\, a plant or a view out the window.   \nA cup/mug of water/tea/coffee  \n  \nWhat does forest bathing have to do with mentoring?\nIf you were at the recent Research Corner with Dr. Sherry Hamby\, you learned about the value of resiliency dosage. What can we do – as caring adults – to foster a young person’s resiliency dosage? A number of ways\, especially sharing and making accessible mindfulness techniques. Guess what? Nature therapy is a tried and true method of being calm and quiet amongst the trees. Observing nature around you whilst breathing deeply can help both adults and children de-stress and boost health and wellbeing in a natural way. And it’s FREE!\n  \nTodd Lynch Bio \n\nTodd is a certified Forest and Nature Therapy guide. He received this credential through the Association of Forest and Nature Therapy training program. It is a 6-month intensive course that includes pre- requisites in Wilderness First Aid/CPR as well as native plant identification.
