SUMMARY:ASOST Cultural Responsiveness in Mentoring Relationships
DESCRIPTION:The ability to connect across cultures is key to supporting our work with youth and caregivers. This interactive training will help participants understand dimensions of identity and culture and the ways that prejudices and bias hamper opportunities for connection. This introductory training helps program staff explore personal dynamics of power and privilege and begin to develop strategies to increase both personal and organizational capacity to practice cultural responsiveness. \nThis training is provided at no cost for ASOST grantees thanks to generous funding from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. \n  \nRegister for this training

DESCRIPTION:Anti-Racism & Storytelling: Meaning Making in Meaningful Ways\nIn this workshop\, playwright\, producer\, and PhD candidate Paul Michael Thomson empowers participants to share their stories and guides them in listening to others’. Led by the principle that one of the most powerful tools for community building is believing each others’ stories\, Paul Michael shares the historical precedent for personal narrative’s ability to break down systemic barriers. In so doing\, he creates a space where story transcends plot and hearing becomes listening. Come prepared to write\, receive\, and get curious about others! Everyone has a story. \n  \nAbout the Presenter\nPaul Michael Thomson is a theatre artist\, interdisciplinary scholar\, educator\, and founder of The Story Theatre\, 501(c)(3) in Chicago\, IL. Currently pursuing his PhD in Afro-American Studies through the W.E.B. Du Bois Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst\, Paul Michael’s research centers on the intersections between creative practice and Black liberation. \nHe graduated summa cum laude from the Honors College at the University of Arizona with a BA in Africana Studies\, a BFA in Acting Performance\, and minors in Spanish & Art History. As a scholar\, he has received research fellowships from the Black Metropolis Research Consortium\, the W.E.B. Du Bois Center\, the Flinn Foundation\, and the College of Humanities & Fine Arts. As a playwright\, his works have been produced nationally to critical acclaim. \nThe Story Theatre was named “Best New Theatre Company” by the Chicago Reader in 2020 and has received support from the Illinois Arts Council\, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events\, and the Chicago Bulls Charities in order to produce three sold-out seasons. \n\nRegister for this event

SUMMARY:Exploring Latino/x Mental Health: Assimilation and Acculturation
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Latino/x Mental Health: Assimilation and Acculturation \nThe Latino/x community in the U.S. often grapples with the processes of Assimilation (fully adopting the new\, more dominant culture) and/or Acculturation (embracing the original culture and adapting to the dominant one) which can be challenging at best and painfully disorienting for many. This session focuses on the complex impact of these two processes on the behaviors\, relationships\, and values of first and second-generation Latino/x immigrants. \nBy the end of the workshop\, participants will have~ \n\nIdentified aspects of Assimilation and Acculturation from the first and second-generation U.S. Latino/x immigrant perspective\nExplored the advantages and disadvantages of Assimilation and Acculturation experiences and the mental health impact associated with them\nConsidered the stress of the immigration experience in relation to a sense of self\, safety\, and belonging\n\n  \nAbout the Presenter \nYsabel Garcia is a first-generation Dominican immigrant with a bold and ambitious mission to dive heart first into raw and honest conversations about mental health\, equity\, and suicide prevention. She is a social justice educator\, skilled dialogue facilitator\, wounded healer\, and disruptor of systems of oppression. \nShe embodies her messaging and personality through Estoy Aqui LLC\, a grassroots initiative that provides suicide prevention training and social justice education to organizations and institutions serving the Latino/x and Black community. Her main goal is to raise awareness of the underlying social\, cultural\, and racial factors that create conditions for suicide to exist in these populations. \nShe has earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Child Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Public Health from Bay Path University. \n  \n\n\n\n  \nRegister for this event
