Welcome inaugural Corporate Mentoring Honor Roll inductee Liberty Mutual

LM-2colorMass Mentoring is launching the inaugural Corporate Mentoring Honor Roll to recognize Massachusetts businesses of all sizes that are strengthening communities through engagement of employee, financial, and in-kind resources. In late 2013, we invited businesses and mentoring programs to nominate a company for the Corporate Mentoring Honor Roll. The honorees were recognized at the Jan. 14 Corporate Mentoring Summit at State Street in honor of National Mentoring Month, and in conjunction with the Summit we will be rolling out an inductee in the days around the event. Today’s post recognizing Liberty Mutual comes from their nomination submitted by Mass Mentoring.

Liberty Mutual is a long-time supporter of Mass Mentoring Partnership (MMP) and numerous agencies in the mentoring field.

In 2004, the company launched the Liberty Mutual Mentoring Initiative, an unprecedented, $1.5 million investment in expanding youth mentoring in 10 target cities throughout Massachusetts. They also invested in first-time research on local mentoring and technical assistance from MMP.  This investment created more than 1,700 additional matches.

Since that time, Liberty Mutual continues to be a key philanthropic supporter of mentoring programs across the city. Some of the other ways Liberty has worked with MMP include:

  • Underwriting the KELLY Awards, which are educational grants given to mentees nominated by their mentors for overcoming and persevering through adversity.
  • Support for the Mentors of Color campaign, a field-wide effort to increase awareness about the need for mentors of color, influence adults of color from diverse backgrounds to volunteer as mentors and increase the cultural competency of mentoring programs.
  • Support for mentoring through sponsorship of the Rodman Ride for Kids, Champions of Mentoring breakfast and grants to support the expansion of mentoring in under-performing schools in Greater Boston and for expansion of mentoring in Western Massachusetts
  • Former Liberty CEO Ted Kelly has been a past board chair of MMP and Melissa MacDonnell also served on Mass Mentoring’s board for close to 10 years. Their leadership has been critical to helping MMP reach our mission.

109Liberty Mutual also provides financial, in-kind and employee volunteerism to many mentoring programs across the state including  Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass/Metrowest, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay, Big Sister Association of Greater Boston, Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, and Child & Family Services to name a few.

Each year, Liberty Mutual also holds an annual mentor recruitment lunch for employees to learn about mentoring programs in Greater Boston and Liberty has donated its billboard space in support of National Mentoring Month and agencies such as Partners for Youth with Disabilities.

Congratulations to Liberty Mutual being named to the Corporate Mentoring Honor Roll.
