Everybody Wins! Metro Boston thanks their mentors

I’m Dana, the volunteer outreach coordinator with Everybody Wins! Metro Boston (EWMB). Since EWMB’s inception in 2002, the program has expanded from one school in Cambridge to 16 schools across the Greater Boston area. Communities served include Boston, Chelsea, Everett, Cambridge, Somerville, Framingham, Waltham, and Billerica.

We currently have more than 900 amazing volunteers from 81 partner companies participating in Power Lunch. Volunteers travel to a nearby elementary school once a week and read to a child during that child’s lunchtime. Through the program, the students learn to love reading, develop fundamental literacy skills, and have a mentor to rely on and trust. Our mentors help to foster a lifelong enthusiasm for books and reading in their students, ensuring that the child will be a successful reader throughout their life.

To celebrate our mentors and their commitment to our students, we held our annual Mentor Appreciation Event on Jan. 26, National Thank Your Mentor Day. Our event was held after work at The Point, and our mentors came in from the cold to enjoy appetizers, drinks, and a free raffle with prizes from Panera, Lindt Chocolate, Barnes and Noble, and more. All mentors were invited to attend, and many who were unable to make it expressed their appreciation that their efforts were noted. One mentor RSVP-ed to say “I can’t make it Thursday night, but thank you for making me feel so appreciated!” All mentors received a card from their student for National Thank Your Mentor Day, and were given bookmarks from Mass Mentoring Partnership.
