After visiting Mexico on a service trip in high school, Mason Bourdeau, a lifelong resident of Lynn, knew he wanted to make a difference in the community. “I had always been aware of Big Brothers Big Sisters,” Mason explained. “Becoming a Big Brother seemed like the best way to give back directly to my community.” Now, as a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay, Mason spends each Sunday mentoring Josh (9), who currently lives with his grandmother in Lynn. As a social worker, Josh’s grandmother was familiar with the benefits of the program. She was so... Read more

Yanializ was 7 years old when her mother signed her up for the Big Sister program.  Yanializ lives in Lynn and had watched her older sister’s relationship with her own Big Sister Association mentor over the years and wanted to have a special adult in her life as well.  She said that she was bored at home on the weekends and wanted someone happy to spend time with. Andrea lives in Lynn and first looked into mentoring through Big Sister Association in the spring of 2010. The following was published in the January 30, 2015 edition of the Boston Business Journal. By Martin J. Walsh and Bob Gallery As we enter 2015, there are many reasons to be excited about Boston's future. We're making real strides in education, innovation and economic growth, to name just a few areas. But our continued success as a community is inextricably linked to the development of Boston's youth. Too many young people in our city lack caring adults in their lives, depriving them of a support system that's critically important to their future success. That has long-term impacts on their... In honor of National Mentoring Month, we asked Massachusetts State Senator Linda Dorcena Forry to share her thoughts on mentoring and the effect that it has had on her life. January is National Mentoring Month and I encourage you to consider becoming a mentor in the New Year. I know from my own experiences the role that a caring adult can play in a young person’s life. Growing up in Boston, my parents were my very first mentors. They worked extremely hard to provide opportunities for my siblings and I, as they also helped other families. My parents mentored many families on becoming citizens... Read more

Mass Mentoring Partnership is excited to join with the city of Boston and the Mayor's Mentoring Movement! Mayor Walsh's initiative seeks to recruit at least 1,000 new mentors and caring adults over the next two years, with at least 10% of those being City of Boston employees. Mass Mentoring Partnership is joining with the Mayor's office to help match these volunteer mentors with our program partners in Boston.  We have a new webpage on our site devoted to the Mayor's Mentoring Movement. Check it out here or by going to www.bostonmentors.org. It's a great place to learn more... Read more

What if there was a way to change the lives of young people in our communities and simultaneously transform the way we think about long-term success for our businesses? It starts with understanding that every young person deserves to have a caring adult in their life. However, the reality is that there are many young people in our communities who do not naturally have access to the types of adult role models that can help propel them to future success. That’s where we, as business leaders, can make a difference by supporting mentoring and empowering positive, youth-adult relationships.... Read more
