Position Summary: 

MMP is seeking a talented and dynamic professional to join our team as a Manager of Targeted Communities as we implement new and innovative strategies to achieve our goals. MMP is committed to building a culturally diverse staff of professionals who are experienced in and motivated to promote positive youth development and address diversity issues within our own work and that of the programs with whom we work. This manager works as an integral part of the External Affairs and Program Services teams to build partnerships and the capacity of youth mentoring and other youth-serving programs in the communities of Dorchester, Mattapan, and Roxbury; Lynn and Lawrence, and Cape Cod. The Manager of Targeted Communities’ primary focus is to build relationships and leverage resources to increase the quality and quantity of empowering youth-adult relationships in the abovementioned targeted communities. This position is based in MMP’s Boston office with travel to Lynn and Lawrence and the Cape for 40% of their work week.

As MMP’s regional presence and primary spokesperson in these targeted communities, the Manager of Targeted Communities will be a locally-based knowledgeable voice for the field of youth development and mentoring, mobilizing internal and external resources to meet the needs of youth serving programs and grow the field. The Manager of Targeted Communities will be the resource broker and conduit between these regions and MMP’s full suite of services to mentoring and youth serving programs, and he/she will build key strategic relationships within the region’s youth development field including youth mentoring programs, community and business leadership, and local government.

Reporting to MMP’s Chief Program Officer, the Manager of Targeted Communities will work with the full support of MMP staff, assuring that initiatives in these targeted communities are fully integrated into the organization’s strategic goals and annual operating plan.  

Position Requirements: 
  • BS or BA and at least 3-5 years relevant experience required
  • Preference to candidate from or with strong connections in one of the following regions: Dorchester, Mattapan, and Roxbury; Lynn and Lawrence; and Cape Cod
  • Solid background / experience in community organizing and relationship building
  • Background in youth development, mentoring, public health, or related field
  • Some experience providing training, public awareness opportunities and technical assistance with a adult learners
  • Proven ability to manage projects, partnerships, and professional relationships
  • Ability to plan, organize and think strategically
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Ability to work and connect with diverse communities, people and partners, and a commitment to promoting inclusion in all practices and efforts
  • Capacity to learn quickly and multi -task effectively
  • Self directed and entrepreneurial with ability to work independently and with a great amount of ambiguity
  • Strong written and verbal communication and public presentation skills
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively in a team environment with colleagues, program providers, community stakeholders, and volunteers
  • Understanding the process to develop and respond to funding opportunities
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to programs across the state of Massachusetts
  • Some night and occasional weekends work

Responsibilities: 

Partnership Development and Public Awareness:

  • Identify new and support on-going strategic partnerships with various stakeholders including community and business leaders, higher education institutions, and affinity groups to broker access and opportunities for mentoring programs/youth serving organizations to recruit volunteers and/or mentors
  • Plan and implement regional events that raise the profile of mentoring and empowering youth adult relationships in the regions
  • Develop new and innovative strategies to raise awareness about mentoring and empowering youth adult relationships and the need for more support and resources for the movement
  • Identify new and support on-going strategic partnerships with media, community and business leaders to position mentoring as a preventative strategy central to youth violence prevention, educational achievement, and workforce development

Program Capacity-Building: 

  • Serve as project manager for the RFP processes and grantee selections in targeted regions, support the programmatic and organizational implementation of selected project(s), and provide capacity building assistance to grantees
  • Develop strong relationships with mentoring programs and youth serving agencies in targeted communities
  • Use existing MMP institutional knowledge and access additional regional resources to identify opportunities for program collaborations, replication of innovative models, and dissemination of best practices to build the capacity of the region to ensure that more young people have the opportunity to engage in high quality mentoring and empowering youth adult relationships
  • Serve as an initial resource and as a resource broker to MMP colleagues to meet the training, consultation and capacity building needs of the communities
  • Identify training needs and deliver / conduct trainings and technical assistance on programmatic and organizational development topics with colleagues on the Program Services Team
  • Convene/facilitate and/or participate in youth development networking meetings
  • Develop and promote activities, services and products that support the national and local My Brother’s Keeper Initiative

Field Resources and Development: 

  • Help identify groups to participate in fundraising activities
  • Working in collaboration with the Senior Manager of Government Relations, support relationships with key policy makers in the region and work with mentoring programs to maximize their advocacy efforts
  • Working in collaboration with the Senior Manager of Development, develop relationships with and cultivate prospective donors and funders in targeted communities that yield field resources and funding opportunities for MMP
  • Steward current institutional funders and donors for MMP and the mentoring field
  • Identify partners and resources to access complimentary admissions, tickets, and activity passes for distribution to mentoring programs

Other Responsibilities:

  • Promote the mission and goals of MMP and fully participate in setting and achieving the annual operating plan to achieve the goals
  • Participate in meetings, organizational functions, and community events necessary to perform job responsibilities and/or to represent MMP
  • Identify and participate in appropriate community meetings, task forces, and coalitions to improve youth services, in addition to finding opportunities to educate these groups
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance relevant knowledge and skill sets
  • Meet all requirements to utilize the MMP customer relationship database and other MMP reporting systems to track pertinent data
  • Participate in creating a more culturally responsive environment at MMP
